In his celebrated book ‘Life and Death of Democracy’, Professor Keane of Westminster University states that representative democracy was not born in England but in the Cortes of Leon in 1188. The writer Juan Pedro Aparicio recounts the great event, and then shows, from a synthetic perspective of two thousand years of history, the roots of a kingdom whose subjects practiced direct democracy in their Open Councils.
