The conference's two keynote speakers were Professor John Keane and Professor Josiah Ober.

John Keane is based at the Centre for the Study of Democracy (Westminster University, London), which he founded in 1989, and the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin.

In this lecture John Keane presents the paper entitled "Does Democracy Have A Violent Heart?" examining the seemingly juxtaposed, yet evidently intertwined, concepts of war and democracy from both an ancient and modern understanding

Josiah Ober currently holds joint appointments in the Department of Classics and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

In this lecture, Josiah Ober presents the paper "Democracy and the Organisation of Knowledge" which examines Athenian military proficiency during the Arkhidamian War.
